Naturopathic Medicine

Practice in Canada

Naturopathic Medicine is a distinct primary health care system that blends modern scientific knowledge with traditional and natural forms of medicine. Naturopathic medicine is the art and science of disease diagnosis, treatment and prevention using natural therapies including botanical medicine, clinical nutrition, hydrotherapy, homeopathy, naturopathic manipulation, traditional Chinese medicine / acupuncture, and lifestyle counseling.

A Naturopathic Doctor is a primary care practitioner that seeks to restore and maintain optimum health in their patients by emphasizing nature’s inherent self-healing process. A Naturopathic Doctor views the individual as an integral whole including the physiological, structural, psychological, social, spiritual, environment and lifestyle factors affecting health. Symptoms of disease are seen as warning signals of improper functioning of the body and unfavorable lifestyle habits. Naturopathic Medicine emphasizes disease as a process rather than disease as an entity. The primary goal is to treat the underlying cause of the disease. This approach has proven successful in treating both chronic and acute conditions. Treatments are chosen based on the individual patient, not based on the generality of symptoms.

Colon Hydrotherapy

What is colon hydrotherapy?

Colon hydrotherapy (or colonics) is an age-old therapeutic treatment used to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Using techniques dating back as far as the ancient Egyptians, colon hydrotherapy is a safe, gentle & effective treatment used to cleanse toxic matter and tone the whole large intestine. Over time, the bowel may lose its tone and shape, resulting in a number of ailments most notably, poor bowel function. Up until the 1960’s, when prescription laxatives gained popularity, colonics were an accepted and well used practice in most nursing homes, hospitals and doctors offices.

A busy lifestyle and other imbalances can result in poor stimulation of the reflex to have a bowel movement. Using double purified water, disposable, sterile equipment and mild pressure we are able to stimulate a sluggish colon and rebuild the natural muscular contractions or “peristaltic squeeze”. Abdominal massage increases the effectiveness of the treatments. The total treatment requires just less than an hour.

Laboratory Testing

Hormone Balancing

We use clinical expertise, lab testing and herbal/nutritional support to address your hormone concerns. Lab testing is important in identifying underlying issues and can include steroid hormones, stress hormones and thyroid hormone panels. The male and female hormone panels can be especially helpful in providing a justification to get a prescription for bioidentical hormones to allow a manageable pace of hormone change. As ND’s we cannot prescribe the bioidenticals, but can provide the testing and overall regimen to make a reasonable request from those who can. We do provide an herbal, nutritional and lifestyle approach to your health and wellness.

Hormone Testing

Saliva hormone testing is an accurate, non-invasive and clinically useful way of measuring hormones. Thousands of studies using salivary hormone analysis have already been published, with more being added on a regular basis.

Saliva collection is painless and convenient, particularly when multiple samples are required.

Clinical Nutrition

Nutrition and the therapeutic use of foods is a cornerstone of Naturopathic medicine. Food intolerances, deficiencies, dietary imbalances or nutritional excesses have been associated with many medical conditions. A Naturopathic doctor is trained to understand the impact that your diet is having on your health. With appropriate dietary modification and nutritional supplements, health concerns can be treated with fewer complications and fewer side effects. Addressing a fundamental nutritional issue can be a significant part of your pathway to better health.

The concept of detoxification has been used throughout time to describe seasonal and religious rituals in many cultures and civilizations. In our time it is often used to refer to a specific regimen used to cleanse the body. Often targeted to the digestive tract, it offers herbal and food strategies to cleanse. We firmly believe that while cleansing is a valid medical procedure, it is important to support the body’s routes of elimination throughout the year, and not merely in one annual ritual. We aim to include quality of digestion, bile/gallbladder support, liver support and intestinal support as part of a holistic approach. It is only by supporting our natural routes of elimination that we would achieve a lasting benefit to your health.

Naturopathic Counselling

We can help you address the mind/body/spirit connection to stress, anxiety, depression, OCD, addictions and other disorders. By using specific methods such as cognitive behavioural therapy we will assist you on the journey back to health. The inclusion of your nutrition and physiology in the treatment plan will enhance the benefits of counselling.

Botanical Medicine

Medicinal plants have been, and will continue to be a valuable part of health care. These plants and plant substances are highly effective and safe in the right dosage and when used correctly with other herbs and treatments. Herbs can be prepared in many forms - teas, tinctures or capsules. Naturopathic doctors are extensively trained in both the art and science of botanical medicine. Naturopathic doctors are currently the only health care providers in Canada to be licensed for the use of botanical medicine.

Acupuncture is used to relieve pain and treat certain health conditions. Traditional Chinese Medicine has used acupuncture for a wide range of ailments, including pain, energy, addictions, mood issues and digestion. The key principle for Calgary naturopathic medicine that defines and connects all of Chinese medicine is that of Chi, or vital energy. The chi of all organs must be in balance, neither too active nor too dormant, for a person to be healthy. The chi of the body's organs and systems are all connected in meridians or channels that lie just under the skin. A Naturopathic Doctor will use Eastern herbs and acupuncture to assist the body in regulating the Chi and achieving balance. Acupuncture is the use of very thin needles which are inserted into specific meridian points. The practice of acupuncture has been around for over two thousand years and has proven to be very effective especially for pain relief and chronic illness.
