Colon Hydrotherapy

What is colon hydrotherapy?

Colon hydrotherapy (or colonics) is an age-old therapeutic treatment used to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Using techniques dating back as far as the ancient Egyptians, colon hydrotherapy is a safe, gentle & effective treatment used to cleanse toxic matter and tone the whole large intestine. Over time, the bowel may lose its tone and shape, resulting in a number of ailments most notably, poor bowel function. Up until the 1960’s, when prescription laxatives gained popularity, colonics were an accepted and well used practice in most nursing homes, hospitals and doctors offices.

A busy lifestyle and other imbalances can result in poor stimulation of the reflex to have a bowel movement. Using double purified water, disposable, sterile equipment and mild pressure we are able to stimulate a sluggish colon and rebuild the natural muscular contractions or “peristaltic squeeze”. Abdominal massage increases the effectiveness of the treatments. The total treatment requires just less than an hour.

Treatments are performed by certified therapists in a professional clinic setting. Your colon hydrotherapist understands the sensitive nature of the procedure and is trained to maintain a client’s dignity at all times. During the sessions, your therapist will take the time to discuss natural methods to improve digestion and elimination using nutrition and lifestyle.

Listed below are just a few conditions with which colon hydrotherapy can help.

Frequently Asked Questions about Colon Hydrotherapy

What is colon hydrotherapy?

Colon hydrotherapy is a gentle, safe and effective way of removing toxic wastes from the colon (large intestine). The process works by introducing warm, filtered water into the colon to hydrate and loosen hard, impacted fecal matter. This results in the evacuation of these wastes naturally through peristalsis.

What are the benefits of colon hydrotherapy?

-removes old, toxic, stagnant fecal matter
-strengthens muscle tone of the colon
-enhances absorption of nutrients
-decreases absorption of toxins
-increases bowel movement regularity
-aids in relieving gas, diarrhea and constipation
-can enhance mental clarity, improve skin tone and boost energy

What are the signs that the colon is not working optimally?

Some people may experience headaches, constipation, diarrhea, gas, bloating, acne, bad breath, irritability, and body odor.

What is an ideal bowel movement?

A person with a healthy colon will have a bowel movement 2-3 times per day, usually within 30 minutes of eating a meal. Healthy bowel movements should pass easily in one smooth piece, not hard, dry pellets. It should be the consistency of toothpaste, walnut color, and free of fowl odor. And this should all be accomplished without the use of laxatives.

How many appointments will I need?

This depends completely on the health and needs of each individual client, but on average, it is approximately 4-10 sessions.

How long is the treatment?

The treatment will be approximately 40 minutes long, but plan to be here for 1 hour. After the treatment, you will need to use the bathroom to flush out any remaining fecal matter still in the colon. The goal is to have fecal matter leave the body, so this is a very important part of your total session.

What should I expect after the session?

Patients typically feel great after their session. There is about a 1% chance you may feel slightly dizzy or lightheaded but it will go away within about 5-10 minutes. You will be able to carry on your regular day of work or whatever else you have planned for the day without worrying about ‘accidents’.

What is the cost?

Each session is $96.00, with the exception of your first visit. All our colonics are “Doctor Supervised” which means that all new patients will have an initial Naturopathic intake for 15-30 minutes prior to their treatment. This is to ensure that the doctor understands the health history of the patient in addition to possible diet recommendations that may be beneficial during the treatment. It is $225.00 for that initial one-time visit. Please count on 1.5 hours for your first visit.

Is the cost covered by Alberta Health Care?

Unfortunately, no, but most extended health care plans do cover the cost of Naturopathic Medicine. This is the advantage of our colonics being under the ‘care’ of a Naturopathic Doctor. Check with your plan, you may be surprised!

Colonics Preparation - How to Prepare

Colon Hydrotherapy Recommendations

Here are some guidelines to follow in order to maximize the effectiveness of your colon hydrotherapy sessions.

First Day of Colon Hydrotherapy:

"It is safe to let go. Only that which I no longer need leaves my body" -Louise Hay

Eat light –soup or salad, nothing too heavy and try not to eat for 2 hours prior to your session.

Avoid water –for 2 hours prior so that your bladder isn’t full.

Rest and Relax –try to reduce stress as much as possible. Stress plays a huge role in interfering with the body’s ability to digest and eliminate food properly. You will have a much more effective experience if you take deep abdominal breaths and relax the body and mind as much as possible.

Days in between Colon therapy sessions:

  • Eat a whole foods diet and drink ½ you body weight in ounces of water daily. For example, a 150lbs woman should be consuming 75 ounces (or 2.2 liters) of water per day.
  • Do abdominal massage- this will be taught to you in your first session. You can use this at home while lying in bed prior to falling asleep or prior to getting out of bed in the morning, also while sitting on the toilet if you’re having problems eliminating.
  • Do light exercise only.
  • Try dry brushing, infrared saunas, massage, Epson salt baths or juicing. All are excellent ways of detoxifying the body.

After Colon Hydrotherapy appointment series is completed:

  • Continue with eating a whole foods diet that is high in fiber and drinking lots of water. Hopefully, this will kick start a lifestyle change now that your colon is clean and healthy.
  • Take probiotics. It is very important to replenish the colon with healthy bacteria after your series of colon therapy is done.
  • Don’t forget about maintenance. It is important to continue to keep the colon clean. Most clients like to come in the spring and fall, as these are our natural detoxification times.
