It is said that as many as half of visits to family physicians for chronic complaints involve digestion. Many of our patients tell us that they had become frustrated with trying to get help for their ongoing issues. At Fish Creek Naturopathic Medicine, we are dedicated to helping you find the root cause of your problems. We take the time to listen to our patients’ stories and understand how their health is affected. We believe that understanding the function of the gut, and the importance of a healthy gut flora are key to helping you have healthy digestion. Here are some common ailments where we feel a holistic approach may be beneficial:
“Leaky gut” describes that situation where the integrity of the digestive tract is compromised and there is increased interaction between the contents of the intestine and your immune system. This creates food sensitivity where there is a delayed immune reaction to the food passing through the gut. This is different than a food allergy that is immediate and easily observed. The food sensitivity can take days to manifest and can lead to inflammation in the gut, but also systemic issues such as eczema, behavioural issues, mood disorders, migraines and more. Because the antibodies have a long half-life, the evidence of a reaction may remain long after the exposure to to a reactive food. Symptoms include gas, bloating, pain, cramps and distension. Many complain that their belly starts the day normal, but by day’s end they look several months pregnant.
IBS or Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a collection of digestive complaints lumped into a catch-all term. There is no definitive diagnosis outside of a lack of findings for other complaints. Many patients are frustrated that once they have this label, it is hard to get further help. We believe that it is possible to help most patients feel better through identifying food sensitivity, improving the quality of digestion, balancing gut flora and developing lifestyle techniques that support digestive health.
Celiac disease is becoming more common in the western world and is a serious delayed-sensitivity immune reaction to gluten. Non celiac gluten sensitivity is a similar immune reaction to wheat and gluten, but the pathology is not centred on the gut lining, but can aggravate many inflammatory conditions. It is interesting to know that gluten intolerance and non-celiac gluten sensitivity can appear at any stage in life, even after many years of being able to tolerate these foods.
Constipation frustrates many people, and often they feel they have tried everything without finding lasting benefit. At Fish Creek Naturopathic Medicine we understand your discomfort and in addition to food sensitivity testing, we offer colon hydrotherapy to help stimulate a sluggish bowel and to increase the elimination of accumulated fecal matter.
